![]() ARSM in this case can be used as the final grade instead. Grade 8 ABRSM is quite a bloated exam and many students deride preparing the Scales and Aural components of it. Students who do not wish to do ABRSM Grade 8 but they or their parents still insist on a big ABRSM cert. Well, most of these students are normally directed to prepare either ATCL or LTCL. Post Grade 8 students with weak supporting skills e.g. ![]() In this case, if the student does not proceed with DipABRSM, at least he/she still end up with a post Grade 8 cert.Ģ. Before the registration, if the candidate does not score a good Merit/Distinction, probably not a good idea to attempt DipABRSM as the standard of playing expected for DipABRSM is much higher. Result will be out before registration closes for session 3 in Aug/Sep. A candidate who is preparing for DipABRSM can for example register for ARSM in session 1 in Feb/March. There are 3 exam sessions annually in Singapore now. DipABRSM candidates who need a gauge of their Recital component before registering for DipABRSM. For DipABRSM, LRSM, and FRSM, the result will either be only Pass or Distinction.Īnyway, to answer your questions, there are a few scenarios where a student may want consider ARSM:ġ. Compare this with the standard Diplomas, the candidates have to go down to the office with the relevant documents to register.Īlso, unlike the standard Diplomas, ARSM has three bands of results same like Grades 1-8: Pass, Merit, and Distinction. The result will be out also in similar manner. According to ABRSM's office, the registration for ARSM is done together online in the same way we register for Grades 1-8. There is one more info I did not mention earlier. For those who already did the Grade 8, there is no turning back of the clock. Even then, the pieces available in Grade 8 syllabus might still not match that in the DipABRSM list. Regarding what you suggest for the B Piece in Grade 8, I think for that to work, you need to decide to do ARSM even before you select the pieces for Grade 8. Does this mean you can choose any pieces that has previously appeared in the Grade 8 syllabus before? What is definition of "beyond", do you need to seek prior approval for pieces that doesn't fall under the Grade 8 or DipABRSM syllabus? You mentioned there is a 10 minutes free choice component of Grade 8 standard and beyond. Would it be better to work towards them instead of getting distracted with the ARSM? Is there a point in continuing with the grade 8 pieces which has been worked on before already? Also, if you are already intending to do DipABRSM, then there is no running away from the sight reading, scales and aural. In your opinion, who are the likely candidates for this program? Does it make sense for someone who has been on the ABRSM path, working on the DipABRSM to do the ARSM first, or will it become a distraction instead? Reason I ask this is that the durations requirement for pieces of the DipABRSM and ARSM is almost similar. Hi Dreamaurora, many thanks for the detailed write up about the ARSM. ![]() ![]() Since a Grade 8 program is usually around 12-14 minutes long total, recycling all the exam pieces would give a student almost half the ARSM's requirement already. The B piece for Grade 8 is usually a piece from Classical/Romantic era that is part of an extended form like a Sonata and the student should pick a B piece that is part of piece set for DipABRSM if he/she wants to recycle all the Grade 8 exam pieces. The A and C pieces usually do not overlap with the DipABRSM list so students can play these two pieces as the free choice selections. So this technically mean a Grade 8 student can recycle his/her exam pieces for ARSM. Up to 10 minutes can be free choice pieces of Grade 8 standard and beyond. The repertoire list for this performance is exactly the same as the one set for DipABRSM. The exam assesses a 28-32 minutes performance, including breaks and excluding repeats in the music. There is no Sight-reading, Aural, and Scales. Dreamaurora wrote:ARSM is a purely performance exam.
